CDA R2 and the eHDSI templates

HL7 CDA R2 is the XML standard behind most clinical documents in Europe. The eHDSI project publishes the CDA templates for the European Patient Summary, ePrescription, eDispensation and the Original Clinical Documents (laboratory, discharge and imaging reports), which are the documents behind the EHDS priority categories. This guide shows the CDA R2 core model and those templates as structure: what each element and attribute is, how often it may occur, which values are fixed and which value set a code comes from.

eHDSI documents

Document level templates of the eHDSI release below. Each one is applied to a ClinicalDocument that declares its id in templateId.

EHDS priority categories and eHDSI documents

Regulation (EU) 2025/327 names six priority categories. The eHDSI documents below carry those categories in CDA; the FHIR profiles for the same categories are in the EHDS guide.

Check your documents

Paste a CDA R2 document as XML and see where it breaks the CDA R2 model or the eHDSI template it declares. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

The validator checks XML syntax, the CDA R2 core model and the eHDSI templates (cardinality, fixed values, forbidden elements, included templates and bindings to listed value sets). It does not run Schematron.

Sources and licences

Everything here is read from two published sources and compiled to structure only. Descriptions, examples and Schematron messages are not copied: every page links to the source page where they are. Code lists are shown only for value sets of up to 500 codes and without display names; larger sets, such as SNOMED CT and LOINC subsets, are linked instead. Check the licence of each source before you reuse its content, and use the code systems under their own licences.
